Training

For the turbine operator, knowledge is Power (and Money)... literally!

The Pratt & Whitney PT6 is without controversy one of the most successful powerplants to ever power an aircraft; simply stated, it is legendary. Proven reliability, low operating/maintenance costs and simplicty of operation are virtues pilots, owners and mechanics everywhere can agree on. What they may not agree on is how to consistently achieve those virtues. Such closely held opinions and theories are usually based on one or a combination of the following: personal experience (quite often limited), the personal experience of someone else (even more limited) or the sales pitch of a credentialed “expert.”

After several years in the PT6 overhaul business it became apparent that if there was anything our customers lacked it was knowledge of the basic scientific principles that make a turbine do what it does. The pilot could not find the answers on his checklist nor the mechanic in his maintenance and overaul manuals. After flying, maintaining and overhauling hundreds of PT6s we thought, “Why not take what we know and teach it to someone else?” So, for the past few years ATS has travelled around the country teaching pilots, mechanics and turbine owners the basic scientific principles of turbine operation. We do it using common everyday “layman’s terms” and using practical everyday examples that our students are quick to grasp and retain.

It would be natural to assume our motive is to get you to bring your PT6 to us next time you have a problem or it requires some attention. That is partially true but our main objective is to further the “literacy” if you will of anyone flying or maintaining a PT6. Our primary interest is safety, followed closely by the success of our customers and non-customers. We guarantee what you learn in our seminars will help you achieve the maximum functional and financial potential of the PT6, whether you are flying behind (or between) one (two) or turning wrenches for someone who does.

Available Courses

The PT6 Familiarization Course is the basis for each seminar we teach. Our students tell us that going over the basics is helpful even if they have heard them before because they almost always learn something new or comprehend it better than they did the first time.

Examples of topics covered in this course:

  • Basic turbine architecture
  • Basic turbine operation
  • What makes the PT6 “free turbine” concept unique
  • The “cold” and “hot” sections
  • Air flow and the gas path
  • Where the power comes from
  • Cockpit indications and discrepencies
  • Good maintenance practices
  • Maintenance intervals and scheduling

In addition to the above we have also included topics such as:

  • Routine Maintenance
  • Hot Section Inspections
  • Rigging
  • Engine Performance Monitoring
  • Maintenance Planning and Budgeting

Approval

Our course is approved by the FAA for IA renewal. Many insurance companies recognize FAA approved courses such as ours as reccurent training. Members of agricultural associations and other aircraft owner/pilot organizations also give credit for our course. If yours does not call and request that they start doing so.

All attendees who complete the course receive a signed certificate of completion. The certificate is stamped with the IA holders license (if appplicable) and the FAA approved course number.

Train at Your Site

One of the great things about our engine shool is that we will come to you! Provide us with a suitable site, give us some advance notice and we will pack up and head your direction. In 2004 ATS went on the road to Washington, California, Louisiana, Mississippi and North Carolina in addition to holding a seminar at our home base in South Texas.

The Professor

The owner of ATS, Mr. Jerry (J.D.) Dunson teaches all of the classes. If you haven't already done so you can read about J.D. on the About Us page.
